Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928–1987) gave himself a dog for Christmas, a black dachshund he named Archie, after Archie Bunker, the dogmatic character from All in the Family, a popular television program at the time. He took the dog with him to several places. At one party in 1972, someone witnessed him whispering in the dog’s ear, “Talk, Archie, talk. Oh, Archie, if you would only talk, I wouldn't have to work another day in my life. Talk, Archie, talk.”
Born in St. Augustine, Florida, Martin Hoffman first started painting while working as a designer at a furniture manufacturer in Florida, and he continued to paint while pursuing a successful career as a graphic designer and illustrator for Playboy magazine, among others. He was invited to do this portrait of Warhol by the artist himself.
