In the early 20th century, Italian artist Rico Le Brun immigrated to the United States and worked as a commercial artist. In the 1930s he returned to Italy to study frescoes, eventually coming back to California in 1936. Depicting the death of 15th-century poet, murderer, and thief François Villon, this print is a good example of his dark imagery of the mid-1940s when he was teaching in Mexico.
