Stanley William Hayter started experimenting with the surrealist technique of automatism and automatic drawing as early as 1933. He found preconceived ideas to be limiting to his creativity.
He urged his students at the studio to try this as well, bringing the graphics arts in line with the avant-garde methods that were emerging in painting.
