Stanislav Libenský and his partner Jaroslava Brychtová are often considered the most influential glass artists in the world. They are known for their large, abstract artworks that capture and transform light and color. This vitreograph resembles the preliminary sketches that Libenský would create for their sculptures.
While both were working during a time where art was restricted by Czechoslovakia’s Communist government being glass artists allotted them more creative freedom than traditional painters and sculptors. Because glass was considered a functional and ornamental medium, and not fine art, they could explore abstraction without government censorship.
