Born in Zonnemain, Holland, Leonard Ochtman immigrated with his family to America in 1866, settling in Albany, New York. Trained initially as a draftsman, Ochtman studied art briefly, traveling to Europe in 1885 after some success exhibiting his art in the United States. Upon his return, he settled in New York City, and later, established a studio in Mianus, Connecticut. Along the Mianus River is typical of Ochman's sensitive and lyrical interpretation of the Connecticut countryside. Its viewpoint is from an elevated ridge that overlooks the Mianus river, the composition divided by horizontal bands of the foreground and sky that emphasize the quiet, stable ambiance of this setting.
