A study of moccasin colors, materials, tailoring, and design helps to distinguish the work of one tribe from another. So distinctive are some moccasin styles that people could identify the tribe of the wearer by looking at footprints. The split tongue of these moccasins was traditional with the Sioux and helped to distinguish this style from others.
