Hiroshige’s series capturing the sites of the provinces features famous views and natural wonders, including this one from Tango Province. Covered in pine trees and extending as a long, narrow portion of land out into the Bay of Miyazu, the peninsula demonstrates the welcome isolation created by such a peculiar coastline. Although a sandbar, rather than a bridge, the peninsula functions visually and narratively like a passageway between quiet coastal towns.
