First educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, Roszak later moved to New York, where he studied at the National Academy of Design and also took courses with the painter George Luks. A fellowship in 1929 allowed him to spend an extended period in Europe, where he was exposed to the latest developments in abstract art, including the machine aesthetic of the Bauhaus, that would shape his career. This painting represents the fundamental developments of this period. The use of aluminum reflects his interest in industrial mediums and in the principles of Constructivism, both of which he developed further in later sculptural work.
