As a child Alfredo Zalce and his family relocated to Mexico City, and there his path to school led him through many revolutionary skirmishes. He considered the most important part of his art education to be when he traveled through Mexico as a cultural missionary, a job that called for a variety of tasks, including the painting of posters and murals. At that time he claimed, "I learned the real function of art…I talked with farmers and teachers and I learned of many new problems." Zalce was a founding member of the Taller de Grafica Polular (1937).
