Born in Orsholtgaard, Denmark, in 1877, Johan Waldemar de Rehling Quistgaard received his bachelor's degree from the Royal College of Agriculture in Copenhagen. He emigrated to the United States in 1901 and exhibited in the World's Fair in 1904. During the early 20th century, Quistgaard depicted many well-known Americans, including Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, and explorer Roald Amundsen. In 1918 he was part of an early movement to form an American national portrait gallery.
