Those familiar with State Street in Ann Arbor will know it as the city’s busy center, bustling with students and visitors on foot and in cars. Depicted here is University Hall, at the heart of the University of Michigan’s (U of M) campus, built in 1872. Then the area was traveled by horse and carriage. Due to structural issues, University Hall was demolished in 1950. Emil Weddige captures this history to honor U of M’s 150th anniversary in this lithograph.
Weddige co-founded the Michigan Printmaker’s Society in 1952 and is widely credited as a pioneer in color lithography and catalyst for a renewed interest in stone lithography in late 20th century America.
