James Adkins uses charcoal as his primary medium. He prefers charcoal to other drawing methods, because it can be manipulated whereas other mediums have “limitations on how many times you can put on and take off layers.” For the past decade, Adkins's work has focused on the nude figure. He often directs a spotlight on the model’s body to create stark value contrasts and crops part of the figure out of the frame to create a dramatic composition.
