One of the world’s most well known painters, Rembrandt was an equally prolific printmaker. He produced many of his major etchings between 1650 and 1669. The rich blacks– often reinforced with dry-point –and the quick telling character of the lines, have made these works masterpieces in the history of printmaking. In his lifetime he completed more than 300 etchings. This print shows his supreme technical mastery. He developed the technique of etching to a level seldom equaled in the 300 years since his death, and by means of this skill produced some of his most profound work.
