Albert Lebourg’s paintings of Paris subtly chronicle the changes engendered by modernization. As one century ended and another began, Lebourg made a case for preserving the beauty and charm of these locales. In Effet de neige aux portes de Paris, the blanket of overcast sky and the treatment of the snow that covers the land exhibit his strong stylistic link with the Impressionists. The juxtaposition of light and shadow are masterfully rendered, and the technique of using bold brushstrokes and silhouetting figures and buildings reflect Lebourg’s personal style at its best.
