Karl Schrag joined the Paris Atelier 17 in 1932 and continued to work at the studio until the outbreak of World War II. Like many other artists during this time, he fled Europe for New York City. Once the New York City branch of the Atelier 17 was set up, he continued his work at the studio. When Stanley William Hayter returned to Paris in 1950, Schrag became Director of Etching at the New York City Atelier 17. He later joined the faculty at Cooper Union, imparting his knowledge of etching on new generations of printmakers for decades to come.
