Marc Chagall is known for his imaginative subjects that combine elements of Jewish and Russian folklore with personal experience. In much of his art, he recollects his childhood memories of growing up in the Jewish quarter of Vitebsk (now Viciebsk), Russia. Chagall used bright, rich colors and rhythmic, curvilinear forms to record his hopes, dreams, fears and frustrations. The lack of shadows and deep space and the sparse use of perspective and modeling, gives his work a childlike quality.
The muted colors, irregular lines, and presence of floating figures all lend a very dreamlike quality to this and other works by Chagall. He is known as an artist of fantasy, sensitively portraying the inner workings of the imagination through personal experience.
