The silvery tonalities and superimposed veils of light and shade in this work are characteristic of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s lyrical style. The immediate popularity of such paintings resulted in their frequent imitation by Corot’s contemporaries. His innovative approach of painting directly from nature contributed significantly to the tradition of nineteenth-century landscape painting, having a direct influence on the Impressionists.
