Lucien Pissarro was the son of the noted French Impressionist Camille Pissarro. Born in Paris, Lucien moved to England in 1890 where he settled and married, though he frequently traveled back to France. In addition to being a gifted painter, he was also an illustrator and printmaker.
His father, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, pioneered a style of Neo-Impressionism painting called pointillism, in which small patches of pure colors are used to create the illusion of blended colors and shading when viewed from a distance. Lucien, who was taught to paint by his father, was inspired by him and his artwork. This painting is an early work that shows his father’s influence with its constructive representation of nature.
