Apollo, Roman god of the sun, is depicted with his head turned to the right, about to play his lyre (a musical instrument of ancient Greece). The quiver represents his role as the patron of archery, while the lyre represents his role as the patron of poetry and music. As the embodiment of the ideal form of male physical beauty, Apollo was known to have several love affairs with nymphs and mortal women.
