Paul Désiré Trouillebert was initially trained as a portrait painter but his primary interest was landscape painting. This painting reflects his aptitude for this genre, particularly in his feathery brushwork and muted tonalities. These qualities indicate the strong influence of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, an eminent landscape painter of the Barbizon School (a group of artists that gathered in Barbizon, France, to paint realistic, natural scenes).
