Edouard Vuillard, a French Post-Impressionist, became well known in the art world for his depiction of interiors, famous for their subtle color and intriguing complex patterns. It is said that Vuillard led an intense inner life and his immediate surroundings - the home of his mother, the rooms of friends, or the familiar streets of Paris - were sufficient subjects for a lifetime of creativity.
Figures are often present in his work. They are usually friends or family members - particularly his mother. They are forms, shapes, colors and patterns, important as such, and are woven into the total fabric of the picture. Vuillard’s innovations of flattened areas helped lay the groundwork for further abstract innovations in twentieth-century painting.
