French Post-Impressionist Édouard Vuillard had a multifaceted career, though he is most recognized for his compositions devoted to intimate domestic interiors and his association with a group of Post-Impressionists called Les Nabis (young artists committed to creating work of a symbolic and spiritual nature). His works often depicts the familiar – illustrating his family and friends in their immediate surroundings – yet they also exude an aura of mystery. For example, Woman Lighting a Stove in a Studio depicts Vuillard’s mother, a dressmaker. He lived with her until her death in 1928 at the age of ninety, describing her as his artistic muse.
