At the young age of fourteen, Samuel Adler began to study at the National Academy of Design. Adler was more concerned with the expression of feeling than with conventional art techniques, resulting in him working with a variety of media. Throughout his life, Adler traveled and created art throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico, and Guatemala.
According to the artist, “The drawing for this lithograph was made in Patecuaro, Mexico, which is a little town, unlike Mexico City and Monterey, [and] was at the time unfrequented by tourists. It was early on Sunday morning when I came upon this procession of little barefoot boys bound for church, and it seemed that here in essence was unsullied purity.”
