Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Italian parents Eduardo Paolozzi was trained at the Edinburgh College of Art, the St. Martin's School of Art, and the Slade School. His first one-person exhibition was in 1947 at the Mayor Gallery in London. Later that year, Paolozzi moved to Paris and became influenced by postwar Surrealism and so-called primitive sculpture. Known for his deconstructed human forms, he experimented with the addition or removal of rectilinear elements, often incorporating an industrial, geometric, or biomorphic element. This bronze sculpture depicts a figure in a distorted and expressionistic style much like the “art brut” (French for raw or rough art) style used by Jean DuBuffet. In 1986, he was made "Her Majesty's Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland" by Queen Elizabeth.
