Enrico Donati moved to the United States from Italy in 1934 to attend the Art Students League. He was influenced by Surrealist movement and helped organize the Exposition Internationale de Surrealisme (International Exhibition of Surrealism) in Paris. Surrealist artists sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind through imagery.
By the 1950s, Donati focused on experimenting with surface textures, which he continued to examine throughout the rest of his career. In the 1960s, when this work was created, the fossil became a major theme for him.
