Inspired by the classical form of a Greek trophy, or amphora, Kari Russel-Pool subverts the ancient form by creating it out of a flameworked glass daisy chain. This work is from a series titled “Trophies,” which the artist created as a result of a struggle with an undiagnosed illness that left her unable to perform ordinary tasks. Rather than dwell on what the illness prevented her from doing, she realized that she needed to recognize what she had already achieved. These trophies commemorate her victories both large and small in her artistic, as well as every day, challenges.
