Veracruz refers to the central Gulf Coast of Mexico and has served as a stylistic designation for all art emanating from the region. This bowl was created during the Late Classic period (ca. 600-900) when Veracruz ceramics were at their most expressive. Here a man’s torso is transformed into a large bowl while his arms reach forward, one holding on to what appears to be a human heart. His animated face is typical of sculpture from this region.
