Dachshunds are popular breeds of dogs in both Denmark and Germany, where these two sculptures were made. The breed originated in Germany, with dachshunds translating to “badger dog,” they were bred for their hunting abilities. Their excellent sense of smell along with their low bodies and strong legs made them ideal for hunting badgers who burrow in the ground.
Both Rosenthal and Bing & Grondahl (later called Royal Copenhagen in 1987) started producing porcelain figurines and other home goods in the late 19th century. Domestic scenes, dogs, cats, and other everyday comforts are popular subjects for both companies.
