Born in Lorain, Ohio, in 1909, Ernest Scanes studied art at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Scanes worked as a commercial artist, producing illustrations for books and magazines. Scanes was also an accomplished painter and printmaker of Regionalist-inspired works. This drawing is a prepatory sketch for a finished work—Study for a Girl in Landscape (below)—which is also part of the FIA’s permanent collection not currently on view.
