Diana is shown here as the Roman goddess of the hunt, holding her bow and in the act of drawing an arrow from the quiver on her back. In ancient Greece, she was associated with hunting and worshipped as an earth goddess who protected animals, tame and wild. Later, the Romans worshipped her as a triple deity: Diana (the earth), Luna (the moon), and Hecate (the underworld). The composition of this piece was inspired by an ancient Greek sculpture of the goddess, which was copied several times.
