Zoltan Sepeshy was born in Kassa, Hungary, in 1898. He attended the Royal Academy of Art in Budapest and received degrees in art and art education. He also studied briefly in Vienna and Paris before going to the United States in 1921. In 1922 he settled in Detroit, and took employment as an architectural draftsman. He was appointed an instructor at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now College for Creative Studies) in 1926. In 1930 he became head of the painting department at the
Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He later served as the Academy’s director from 1947–1959 and later as president until his retirement in 1966.
