Toshiko Takaezu’s ceramics were inspired by Zen Buddhism, nature, Abstract Expressionism, and by her Hawaiian and Japanese heritages. The cross-cultural influences of East and West culminate in designs that are traditional, yet modern. Takaezu used the potter’s wheel to form this small globular vessel with a tiny neck. Though her forms were relatively classic, her approach to glazing was expressive and spontaneous. She freely dipped, poured, and painted her vessels like abstract painter applies paint to a canvas.
