Although we are unsure of the maker of this porcelain dog, it is in the style of the popular Staffordshire dog (named after the county in England where they originated). First produced in the 18th century, Staffordshire dogs are ceramic figurines of King Charles spaniels. Sold in a set, they were used as decor on mantles and sometimes called “hearth spaniels” or “fireplace dogs.”
