David Furman is known for his realistically rendered works, including cups of coffee and pencil cans. Though it looks like a real tin can with paint-covered brushes, this work is actually made out of clay. This work derives from trompe l'oeil—French for "fool the eye"—which typically refers to paintings made to look like a three-dimensional objects. Here, Furman makes clay look like paintbrushes and pencils. Furman earned a BA at the University of Oregon and MFA at University of Washington. He has taught at Pitzer College and Claremont Graduate University.
