The counter-culture revolution of the 1960s defined a dynamic period in social, political, and artistic upheaval that was influential in the development of contemporary American ceramics. Ceramicists pushed the boundaries of form and technique. Here, David Gilhooly incorporates found objects—the wicker basket—in his art. Gilhooly was associated with the 1960s California funk ceramics movement where humor, irreverence, and whimsy were championed. Since 1965 frogs have been Gilhooly’s primary subject, the figures are part of what he calls “frog world.”
