This fertility figure, also known as a fetish or nkishi, is thought to promote fertility and provide protection against disease and misfortune. These figures range from only a few inches to a few feet in height. Smaller figures are for individual use, while larger nkishi are responsible for the welfare of a community. An individual consults a diviner to commission a figure prescribed to the client’s needs. While a carver works on the figure, a ritual specialist adds substances and objects that give the nkishi power and enhance its visual impact. In this case metal rings are placed around the figure’s ankles. Metal was believed to increase the potency of magic. In BaSonge culture the power of the nkishi transfers to the client and helps them to accomplish challenging tasks.
