Inventive, appealing, possessing wit, and reflecting remarkable craftsmanship - such are the works by Jacques Hnizdovsky, one of a handful of American masters of woodcut prints. His precision has been compared to that of a Swiss jeweler, created with intimate simplicity, and a faithfulness to realism. A native of the Ukraine, Hnizdovsky came to the United States in 1949. During the next decade, he worked primarily with painting, sculpture and ceramics, before his love of printmaking came to fruition. Success soon followed as he received both a Purchase Award from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and a Tiffany Fellowship in 1961. His works are in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum, the Library of Congress, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
