Walter Midener fled his native Germany in 1938 and became a war hero in World War II in the U.S. Army. Eventually settling in Detroit, he was head of the sculpture department at the Art School of the Society of Arts and Crafts and was president fo the Center for Creative Studies (CCS). He received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from CCS in 1997. Midener's commissions include a portrait bust of Michigan Supreme Court Justice Butzel, a monument in Temple Bethel Memorial Park in Detroit, carved wood relief sculptures for the Detroit Public Library, and decorative screens for the General Motors Corporation.
