At first glance this object looks like an ordinary bowl filled with a deep red liquid. If you look closely, you can see that its apparent functionality is merely a trick of the eye and instead is a nonfunctional sculpture. Frantisek Vizner’s process begins with casting the form of the bowl from a mold. He then cuts the glass with a rotary wheel to smooth the edges. A final polish on the red center of the object is added by acid dipping, a technique that submerges the glass in hydrofluoric acid, creating a shiny surface quality.
