Gellert was born in Budapest, the eldest of six children. His father moved the family to the U.S. when Hugo reached draft age in 1907. Two years later Gellert enrolled at the National Academy of Design. Subsequently, he won enough money, from awards for his art, to return to Hungary in 1914 to visit relatives. This trip was not the happy reunion anticipated, but a painful encounter with the consequences of war and the death of close relatives. The sorrow of this experience left an indelible impression on the artist and affected his work for the rest of his career.
