The ceramic sculptures of Sunkoo Yuh most often begin as ink drawings. He includes figures and objects from his everyday life as well as a symbolic elements. Although the construction of this sculpture took considerable planning, the dripping glaze reflects a feeling of spontaneity. His glazes are applied to create a specific impact on certain parts of the form and is at times applied without regard to the structure, commingling color over multiple figures or objects. This expert application of glaze gives his sculptures an emotional intensity and vibrancy not found in many other figurative ceramics.
Born in South Korea, Yuh immigrated to the United States in 1988. He received his BFA from Hong Ik University, Seoul, and MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred. He is currently the Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens.
