After spending some time in Italy and Egypt, Patti Warashina was inspired by the large ancient sculptures of kings, queens, and gods. She returned to the United States and started creating a series of elongated female figures called the Mile Post Queens. To Warashina, the thin, stretched body of this figure is reminiscent of the sculptures she saw in her travels. Titled Storm Warning, this figure balances perfectly on a thin post while an unseen force whips the hair around her head, like the arrows of a weathervane.
Born in Washington, Warashina received her BFA and MFA from University of Washington, Seattle. She taught at Wisconsin State University, Eastern Michigan, the Cornish School of Allied Arts, and University of Washington.
