Mark Hewitt’s father and grandfather were directors of a large fine porcelain manufacturing company. He could have easily entered the family business but was drawn to an anti-industrial ceramic style. Inspired by folk traditions and the clean simplicity of Asian and African pottery, Hewitt creates ceramics that look distinctly modern.
He fires all of his ceramics in a 40 foot long kiln that is heated with wood. Although it is an ancient process, wood-firing is very complex that requires a lot of time, materials, and effort with a team of at least 3 people. Mark Hewitt and his team fire more than 2,000 objects 3 times a year.
