Richard Shaw
In 2010, Genevieve and Richard Shaw gave more than 200 objects to the
FIA. This gift was unrestricted, meaning that some works could be
deaccessioned to gain funds to only be used to purchase other works of
art. When this occurs, the name of the donor of the object sold is
included in the credit line along with the designation: “by exchange.”
While some works of were deaccessioned because they did not fit into
the collection, many of their gifts, especially classical French and
American paperweights, are still in the collection and on view in the
exhibition Small Worlds.
Genevieve Rosellen Shaw (née McDonnell) was born in Chicago and
moved to Flint as a child. She married Richard A. Shaw, settling in Clio,
Michigan, where they raised four children. Both Genevieve and Richard
were active in projects in Flint and cared deeply about the city’s history
and future.
