Kerr Eby
Canadian, born Japan, 1890 - 1946
Born in Tokyo, Japan to Canadian missionary parents. In 1907 Eby came to the New York and studied at the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute. Began with illustrations, becoming an expert etcher later in career. Served as a sergeant in the Army Engineers in WWI. Eby’s experiences and reactions to WWI could be seen in work, particularly a series in 1935 called War. Eby’s depictions were considered “some of the angriest visual arguments against war ever expressed in this country.”
